642 QuickSpin Operating Instructions
Operating instructions for the Foley 642 QuickSpin Reel Grinder
Power up the machine by turning the knob on the main panel. Ensure the machine's plug is securely locked in place. Turn on the switch, which will light up green. Then, flip the switch to engage the rear flippers in the "up" position.
The flippers can be adjusted closer to or farther from the grinding wheel depending on the reel mower. Measure the distance from the center of the reel to the back of the rear roller. Use that measurement to locate the distance from the grinding stone to the front of the flipper, and then move the flippers back one notch.
Verify that the grinding wheel is lowered sufficiently to avoid hitting any part of the reel or mower during loading. You can lower the grinding wheel by turning both handwheels counterclockwise.
Drive the mower onto the grinder. Once the rear roller passes over the clamps, the clamps will automatically flip back up. When the flippers pop up, the mower can be released and will rest securely on the machine. Next, attach the front clamp. Ensure that neither the clamp nor the stone interferes with any of the blades. Lower the stone using the handwheels as needed.
Attach the spin drive to the proper side of the machine. The motor should be positioned on the bottom of the arm and tightened into place using the clamp.
Adjust the proximity sensors to the proper locations using the cam lock handles, ensuring the grinding wheel fully exits the reel blades at each end before reversing direction. Repeat the process to set the opposite side.
Next, press and hold the safety sensor button for 2 seconds to calibrate the E-stop sensors. The power light will blink, then remain solid. When the blue safety reset button flashes, press it to confirm calibration.
Turn the selector switch to "Set Up Mode" then press the green start button. This will spin the reel at a low RPM and a slow traverse speed. Incrementally raise the grinding wheel until you hear a consistent tick from side to side.
If the wheel hits hard on one side with little or no contact on the other, it means the shaft is not level with the reel. Lower the side with heavy contact and raise the side with light contact. Each tick mark on the handwheel equals one-thousandth of an inch.
After the grinding wheel is lined up with the shaft, lower the grinding wheel by turning each handwheel counterclockwise one full turn.
Turn the selector switch to “Off” and complete any final inspections.
Turn the selector switch to "Run Mode." At this point, the grinding wheel motor will turn on, and the speed of the spin and traverse will need to be set by the operator.
Turn the handwheels clockwise in equal increments to achieve your desired infeed.
The machine uses sensors to ensure proper operating safety. If a sensor is tripped, the machine will automatically shut off. To restart, turn the selector switch to “off’ then press the blue reset button on the left controller.
Return to the right controller, turn the selector switch back to run and press the green start button. Similarly, pressing the red E-stop button will shut down the machine, and the same reset process will be required to continue.
When finished grinding, stop the grinding head by turning the selector switch to the center position, which stops all machine movement. Lower the grinding head ensuring it does not interfere with the bedknife or blades. Remove the front clamp and the spin drive motor, then turn the rear flipper switch to the "down" position.
The mower is now ready to be unloaded from the machine. Push the mower slightly forward to release pressure on the flippers. Guide the mower backward down the ramp to unload.
